If you own an old, inexpensive vacuum cleaner, you might not be too upset when it stops working. However, if your vacuum is new and an expensive model, you'll want to have it repaired to extend its life. A vacuum cleaner repair shop can replace broken parts so your vacuum works like new again.

Sometimes, repairs are simple and you can do them yourself. For instance, a lack of suction can be caused by problems with the hose. Here's how to check the vacuum hose for problems before you take your vacuum to the repair shop.

Check For a Clog

If the hose is packed with a sock, hairball, or some other clog, the vacuum can't create suction. You can check for a clog by holding the hose straight and looking inside to see if you can see through to the other side. You can also try shining a flashlight through the hose to see if the light comes out the other side.

If you find a clog, you might be able to fish it out or push it on through with a broom handle or other long rod. Just be careful not to push against the hose or you might rip a hole in it.

Look For A Leak

If you pull your vacuum around by the hose, you might rip it toward the end where the plastic connector is. If you find a rip there, see if the plastic connector comes off and can be put back on. If so, you might cut the damaged area of the hose off and then put the connector back on. This won't always work because some vacuum cleaners don't have removable connectors.

If the hose has a leak elsewhere, it might be difficult to find. Any leak will affect how well the vacuum creates suction, so look for small holes or tears. If you find a hole or tear, you might be able to seal it temporarily with duct tape or another type of tape that will seal to the hose. Tape might not be a permanent solution, but it could buy you some time until you can buy a replacement hose.

If you can't find a leak or clog in the vacuum hose, then there could be a different problem with your vacuum cleaner. Try reading the manual for troubleshooting instructions. You might be advised to check the filters or remove debris from the roller brush. If you can't find a simple solution to the problem of poor suction, then seek help from a vacuum cleaner repair professional. The problem might be a bad motor or leaky seal that you need professional help to repair. Contact a vacuum cleaner repair service for more information.
